Huka Falls, New Zealand

Published on 27/11/2016 by Finlay Smith

The Huka Falls are the largest falls on the Waikato River, we are lucky enough to have this spectacular scene in our own back yard of Taupo.

It is the most visited natural attraction in New Zealand with almost 220,000 litres of water spilling over every second which is forced through a 20 metre wide gorge and down a set of rapids down a 20 metre drop.

The Huka Falls is at the starting point of the Waikato river which is one of New Zealand’s longest rivers, this river acts as the main drainage point for Lake Taupo and flows into the Aratiatia dam.

Interesting fact, The falls featured in a national scandal in February 1989 when the body of cricket umpire Peter Plumley-Walker was found downstream, with wrists and ankles bound. The resulting investigation exposed the Auckland bondage scene. Dominatrix Renee Chignall was acquitted of his murder after three trials.
